About Us

Orono Schools (ISD #278) is located on a beautiful, 120-acre campus in Long Lake, Minnesota, in the west-metro area of Minneapolis. Organized in 1949, the district serves resident students in all or part of the following communities: Independence, Long Lake, Maple Plain, Medina, Minnetonka Beach and Orono. The statewide enrollment options program allows families who live outside school district boundaries to apply for open enrollment into Orono Schools.

Our uniqueness begins with a single K-12 campus setting near the shores of Lake Classen. The connectedness we enjoy goes far beyond facilities and a serene natural setting. Our schools are a vital part of the communities we serve. We enjoy tremendous support from the residents of these communities!

Small in size... BIG in Achievement!

Our small size helps ensure that every child is known. In alignment with the district's strategic goals, teachers and staff focus on three main areas: scholarship, character and relationships.

Scholarship. Our teachers are committed to individualizing instruction for each learner. This personalization can take many forms, such as differentiation, formative assessment or intervention. Armed with data analysis skills, assisted by technology, and supported by their Professional Learning Communities, our teachers are motivating students to new levels of personal growth and achievement.

Character. Orono Schools continues its longstanding commitment to weaving character throughout the curriculum. This program is an important part of districtwide goals, leadership programs, and staff development initiatives. Learn more about the district's character education program

Relationships. Orono's unique approach focuses on supportive relationships -- staff-to-student and peer-to-peer. Above all, we work to create a supportive environment that empowers students to respect others and making caring decisions.

Our students will maximize their potential in life because of their experiences in Orono Schools. DISTRICT MISSION
