Hardware Glossary
Hardware | Description |
---|---|
Processor |
The processor is the brain of your laptop. It is responsible for carrying out all of the instructions that the computer needs to run. The more powerful the processor, the faster your laptop will be. We recommend a minimum of Intel Core i5, AMD Ryzen 5, or Apple M processor for most students. |
RAM |
Random Access Memory (RAM) is a type of computer memory that stores data that the CPU is actively using. The more RAM a laptop has, the more programs it can run at the same time without slowing down. We recommend 8GB of RAM for most students, as this will allow them to run multiple programs at once without any problems. |
Storage |
SSD stands for solid-state drive. It is a type of storage device that uses flash memory to store data. |

Annual Chromebook Checkout
To all families that choose an Orono Annual Device (Chromebook)
Orono Schools offers the convenience of annual Chromebook checkout for those who may not have their own. Our goal is to provide a technology-rich environment that equips students with the necessary tools for academic success.
If you need to checkout an Orono Annual Device:
At the start of the new school year, students will need to checkout their device by connecting with the media center staff and requesting an annual device.
If you kept your device over the summer:
At the start of the new school year, students will need to "renew" their device by meeting with the media center staff and checking it out again. During this process, the condition of the device will be reviewed, and any new damage will be noted.
Safe and Responsible Use
Student devices are to be used for educational purposes. Devices allow students to access tools and resources not found in traditional offline educational materials. Student devices are owned by Orono Public Schools and loaned to students as a tool for learning. Students are expected to use the device and school accounts for school appropriate uses as indicated by Orono Schools’ board policy #518 Internet Acceptable Use and Safety.
Filtered Experience
Internet traffic on school devices is filtered when utilizing the school network. This filter blocks content in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), including content that is obscene, pornographic, or harmful to minors. In addition we provide ongoing education to all of our students about appropriate online behavior, identity protection measures, and cyberbullying awareness. No filter is perfect, however. The best at-home “filter” is a combination of supervision and talking to students about making good decisions about what they access and distribute online.
Family Involvement and Monitoring
We believe that family involvement and monitoring are crucial in helping students learn responsible device use. You can assist your child by helping them understand the difference between professional and personal use, monitoring their device activity, agreeing on guidelines for home use, and establishing a routine around healthy screen time and what to do in the evening. Some parents choose to charge devices in their bedrooms to ensure they are turned off and not in use during the night.
Taking Care of Student Devices - At Home
Students are expected to take care of their devices as they would any other school property. Here are some guidelines to follow:
- Carry it in a case (provided)
- Treat the device with care and never leave it in an unsecured location
- Do not remove any identifying information (serial # tag, Orono asset tag, etc.) from the device
- Report any damage or issues to the technology department immediately
- Keep it dry and don’t eat or drink near the device. If it gets wet, turn it off immediately and report it to the technology department.
Repair/Replacement Support
For any device-related issues or damages, please contact the technology department at technology@orono.k12.mn.us. Our district technical staff will provide the necessary support and handle repairs. If you need assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to the technology department. For accidental breakages, the district will charge a $30.00 repair fee for the first incident, and subsequent breakages will require families to cover the cost of the part or replacement device if it becomes unusable. If intentional - administration will determine best method for remedy.
*Please note that intentional damage or vandalism will incur the full replacement cost of $250.00.
