End-of-Day Dismissal

Families have two options for end-of-day dismissal:

BUS: Remember, bus passes are not issued the first two weeks of school. This practice allows for drivers to get routes/timing down. To request a one-day bus pass, please contact your child's school main office: Schumann Elementary or Orono Intermediate School. For other bus routing requests, please navigate to the top of this page for details and forms. 

Drive up, Pick up - CarRiderPro:

• If your student(s) are enrolled at Orono Schumann Elementary only, you will pick them up in the Orono Schumann Elementary CarRiderPro line pick up location behind Schumann Elementary entering from Old Crystal Bay Rd. N.
• If you have students enrolled at both Orono Schumann Elementary and Orono Intermediate School, you will pick up in the  Orono Intermediate School back loop, using the County Road 112/Wayzata Blvd. entrance that leads to the cul-de-sac behind Orono Intermediate School (see map below.)
• If your student(s) are enrolled at Orono Intermediate School only,  you will pick them up in the Orono Intermediate School front loop, entering off of Old Crystal Bay Road.

If your family has not been issued a CarRider Pro Tag and you will be picking up your student, please email Hannah.Campbell@orono.k12.mn.us (Schumann Elementary) or melissa.thompson@orono.k12.mn.us (Intermediate School) so a tag can be issued to your family. The district provides one tag for free. Additional tags are $5.00.  If you have lost your tag or need to order additional tags, you may do so through My Payments Plus.

Arrival and Dismissal Times

OMS student doors open at 7:45 a.m. for security reasons. Students should be dropped off no earlier than 7:45 a.m. Class begins at 8:10 a.m. OMS students are dismissed at 2:50 p.m. to buses or waiting vehicles on the upper level. While we would love to have students be able to remain at school past 2:50 p.m., OMS teachers and administrators are in various meetings and there is no student supervision.

Bus Passes

Students are typically not allowed to ride a bus other than their assigned bus. However a bus pass may be assigned to a student who needs to ride a different bus, as space permits.

Written permission from a parent/guardian is required. To request a bus pass, please download, print then complete the BUS PASS FORM and ask your child to bring the completed form to the OMS office before school starts. No requests will be accepted after 10:00 a.m.

The student will present the pass to the driver at the bus entrance.

Additional information about bus passes:

• Bus passes are not issued during the first or last two weeks of school.
• A request is also necessary if a student needs to get off the bus at a bus stop other than the assigned stop.
• OMS students may not ride elementary school buses.

Traffic Flow

Click here to view the video communication for families outlining the required traffic flow pattern for student drop off and pick up. Please allow extra time for student drop off and pick up. Students may only be dropped off on the curb side of the front sidewalk to promote optimal safety.

If you need to drop off or pick up your child, we ask for your cooperation with the following procedures:

• Use the right lane in the designated drop-off/pick-up area; the left lane is for exiting.
• Do NOT drop off or pick up students anywhere in the parking lot.
• Allow students to exit your vehicle only on the curb side (passenger side).
• Exit the drop off area cautiously.
• If you need to enter the building, park your vehicle in a designated parking spot.

These guidelines reflect our top priority – the safety and welfare of your child. Please understand that when necessary, these procedures place safety as a priority over convenience.

Parking Permits

Applications for student parking permits are available through My Payments Plus. The parking permit fee is $240, due at the time of application. Note: Parking permits will be assigned by lot, not as individual spaces. Once students have a permit for a lot, they are able to park in any available spot in that lot only. Students who park in a lot other than their assigned lot, or do not display their permit at all times in their assigned lot, will receive a ticket.

Parking permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. (Students must wait until they have their valid driver’s license before applying as we cannot reserve parking permits.) Make sure you and your student driver have read the information form. Questions can be directed to the Main Office at hsinfo@orono.k12.mn.us.

All students interested in purchasing a parking permit must make sure all detentions have been served, and all fees and fines have been paid. We have many outstanding fees, and permits will not be available for purchase until all detentions are served, and fees and fines are paid.

When to pick up your permit

If available, permits will be distributed from the Main Office. Students must show a valid ID in order to obtain their parking permit. Students may pick up their parking permit before 7:50 a.m. or after 2:40 p.m.

Transportation is provided for all resident students. Bus assignments are uploaded to ParentVUE before school begins each fall. If your child does not need bus transportation, please let us know through email transportation@orono.k12.mn.us.

For Open Enrolled students, state law stipulates that parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from school, or to a bus stop within the school district. Orono Schools offers out-of-district collector stops located around the district boundaries that families may also use. At this time, the district is not creating additional out-of-district collector stops.

A school bus requires 115 feet to safely turn. That's why our buses do not travel into cul-de-sacs. Most cul-de-sacs do not have this much room, particularly in the winter and/or when other vehicles are parked on the street. As a result, going into a cul-de-sac requires a bus to back up. This is extremely dangerous and, with our priority of keeping students safe, a practice we want to avoid whenever possible.

Due to safety concerns regarding busy intersections and roadways, the area around our main campus is designated as a hazardous transportation area. Students are not allowed to walk to or from school, ride bicycles, or ride home with anyone other than their parents or parents’ designee.
