Academics

Beginning in 6th Grade, students may self-select into Enriched English. Students considering enriched English demonstrate strong performance in the English classroom and display a genuine interest in language arts. The following statements describe attributes of successful students.

Advanced Math Sequences

Students at Orono Schools take the following assessments: MAP (Grade 2-8), MCA (Grade 6-8), and PreACT (Grade 8). The assessments follow the district assessment schedule. 

MAP Tests

Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) creates a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student’s learning level. At Orono, we administer the MAP test to students in Grades 2-8. MAP tests are administered in the spring and the fall of each of the three subject areas: math, reading, and science.  

Teachers have access to assessment data—and essential information about what each student knows and is ready to learn within 24 hours. At Orono, we utilize the MAP data to measure academic growth from fall to spring and year to year.

MCA

MCA (Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments-Series II) tests are given to all students in Grades 6-8 in the areas of mathematics and reading. Science is given in Grade 8. 

Each year the Minnesota Department of Education conducts annual assessments of all students in grades 3-8 and 11 in mathematics, in grades 3-8 and 10 in reading and grades 5, 8 and high school in science. The tests measure student knowledge and skills identified in the Minnesota Academic Standards. The test results serve many purposes. The state uses them for school accountability.  Teachers track the performance of students and schools on the Minnesota Academic Standards. Students and their parents/guardians use the scores to track individual progress on the Minnesota Academic Standards. School administrators use them to make instructional and policy decisions.

Test Results on ParentVUE

Your child's test scores are available on ParentVUE. After you log in to ParentVUE, select the Student Data tab. There you will view the achievement level for each area tested.

• D = Does not meet the Standard
• P = Partially meets the Standard
• M = Meets the Standard
• E = Exceeds the Standard 

PreACT

Students take the PreACT 8/9 in the fall of 8th Grade. This is a timed, paper-and-pencil assessment measuring skills in English, math, reading, and science.

Results help students plan for high school, prepare for the ACT, and choose a college/career direction. They also show where students are strong or areas for growth related to College and Career Readiness benchmarks. Please see the following for more information on the benefits of taking the PreACT 8/9.
